So I’ve been missing for a bit, and will try to pick this back up again. I would like to speak a little of the things that I’ve been doing in the period I went missing, health wise.

Last time I blogged (almost a year ago!!!!) I had just done some tests. Everything went a bit pearshaped after that. I also had a test done to see how well or poorly my immune system was doing, and it came back with a bit of an akward result. I have mucosal immuno deficiency. Say what now? Yes, that was not just my reaction, but that of my treating nutritionist as well.

For the majority of people with multiple foodintolerances, or even just one, they often experience that their immune system kicks up a notch causing allergies to happen, or allergy like symptoms.

Apparently, my body decided it had to be different. My wonderfull nutritionist suggested I would take helminthic therapy, as a last resort.

This is often used for people who’s immune system had gone all berserk on them, but because mine was deficient I wasn’t too keen on it. With the mucosal immunodeficiency, I felt I couldn’t risk lowering that any further.

After a few months of pain, misery, fatigue, illness and the lot I ordered this:

It is a completely grainfree, eggfree, and dairy free probiotic. I was a bit carefull with it, because probiotics are fermented, and some are know to increase histamine in the body. Some bacteria are histamine safe, and others are not. This particular one contains Lactobacillus plantarum, which is thought not to be histamine safe. I started out with a very tiny dose, and gradually build up from there. After a while I started noticing my sleep pattern was getting entirely borked when I took these probiotics before bed. This – to me- was a good indicator my histamine levels were building up.

So thats where I was a week ago. Quite a lot to digest, all of it.

When you have something that is so misunderstood by everyone, and you start testing all sorts of things, expect a serious slap in the face. I was so used of running from one doctor to another, and just hearing not to worry about it, to come back when it’s really necesary, that it’s all in my head, having to eat foods that I was completely oversensitive too… You start believing it is all in your head, you are making it up.

So when you get those first tests back, and they do show you something is wrong it is a relief and a blow at the same time. A relief because all of a sudden this becomes real, it is no longer in your head, or a cry for attention. And a blow for that same reason. We have often been so conditioned by our healthcare to believe nothing is wrong with us, that the mere blood result that indicates otherwise, gives us quite the psychological shock!

I know for me, especially when i heard back about the mucosal immunodeficiency, it was a serious mental setback. All of a sudden, I had a visual, proof, real actual words and scientific numbers that showed me that I was really very ill. But if that was real, how could I cope with me ‘making it up’? And others believing I was making it up? Was it really real?

Getting results back, and indicating there is indeed something wrong with our bodies, after having heard and believed there wasn’t for so long takes reinventing ourselves. And that takes courages, and strength to do so.

I’m still on the probiotics, altho they are making me histaminey. If anything, I need to get rid of that extreme lectin sensitivity ruining my gut. I had a few blueberries this morning, and altho they are on no lectin list, i can assure you the extreme lectin sensitive person will not  like them. Scratch that, and move forward again! Always move forward!

Importance of getting tested

I think I rewrote this blog at least 4 times. How do you explain that it is soo important to get tested without offending anyone?

Maybe my story will help with that.

The brave readers who have read all my posts will know I was diagnosed as histamine intolerant by means of a skin scratch allergy test, where I reacted to the histamine control test. Altho I was given a pseudo allergene diet, other symptoms still continued. Because I was treated so badly at hospital, I decided to find myself a dietician.

And I did found one! This specific dietician specialises in food intolerances, so I was feeling quite happy with myself.  This dietician taught me a lot about my condition, and helped me trying to understand my other symptoms. By means of elimination, she thought the other symptoms I had (severe headaches, water retention and some more) were fructose related. Even worse, she thought these symptoms were the result of an extreme fructose malabsorption. So on top off my histamine low diet, I now had to avoid an additional amount of foods. Having both a histamine low and fructose low diet doesn’t leave out a lot to eat I can tell you..

On top off that, I was still getting headaches after my breakfast of buckwheatcrackers.  Then my dietician thought I might also be oversensitive to nickel. Which meant scratching even more. I most definetly wasn’t getting enough nutrients, and I went to see my GP about it. Both her, and a dear friend of mine convinced me to go back to hospital to get the fructose malabsorption tested.  I can’t say I was treated any better, but at least now I had some result: no fructose malabsorption!

What does this mean? I was on the wrong diet for months. I missed on important nutrients in my diet, because of a misdiagnosis, even tho it was well intended! And if I had decided not to get tested for fructose malabsorption, I might have been on the wrong diet for so much longer!

I’m most definetly not saying dieticians are bad for you, because they are most definetly helpfull! But elimination diets only get you so far! Get tested! Get results! If you test positive for a food intolerance, then you know you’re on the right way. If you test negative, you can exclude that already, and start looking for other causes.

I know its hard to find someone to take you seriously, but you will get there! And yes, testing is quite expensive, but at least you’ll know whats going on! Always make sure to get your diagnosis from a profesional, trust me, your nutrients are too important to just leave them out because someone thinks you might have this or that..

So you’ve finally taken that huuuge step to get tested.  How do you prepare, and what can you expect?

I’m going to try and give some tips, from my own experiences. Please note these are only my experiences, and everyone’s story can go very differently..

Talk to your GP or doctor first. Make sure you talk about all your symptoms, and ask if it is possible they can be traced back to a food allergy or food intolerance. Most doctors do not like to be told. For example: when I went to my GP and told him I thought I am histamine intolerant his blunt answer was that the internet provides answers for anything(or that I was putting things in my head). Needless to say I switched GP. I started keeping a food diary that I could take with me, so the doc could see my symptoms were definetly food related. She referred my to the allergy department at the nearest by hospital.

Now how to prepare for that? Often you’ll be asked to take a bezillion food and beverages with you,and they will perform skin tests to see if you have an allergic reaction. if you’re histamine intolerant none of that will happen.  A control skin test usually consists of histamine, and thats how they may determine you’re histamine intolerant or have pseudo allergies.

Its definetly a good thing to do some beforehand studying. make sure you know what DAO’s are, how it can be tested, etc etc etc.. You can take a list of questions with you that you have, and show the allergist. Please note that not every allergist is familiar with these issues, and may not know for example why you can’t eat potatoes, or may not even know what DAO’s are.

Do not be discouraged by this!!!  Even the tiniest step forward can still prove to be a great help for you!!!

My GP told me to go to hospital with the slighest expectations, or none at all.. that way you will not get disappointed!

If you haven’t gotten any answers to your questions, don’t be afraid to post them online. Many of us have found answers thanks to other fellow HIT sufferers, who have been down the same path.

Most of all, don’t give up!!!! I know you can do it!!

Histamine Intolerance and insomnia

So a lot of histamine patients seem to have issues sleeping. As my allergist so eloquently put it and I quote :” histamine is a wake-amine”.  As for me, I wake up from the slightest light or sound. It gets so bad I wake up multiple times per hour. You can imagine this is quite hard. It means waking up just as tired as when you went to bed. I’ve tried a wide variety of tricks, but nothing really does seem to do the trick.  I’m on sleep medication right now, carefully discussed with my doctor. I take Atarax before I go to bed, and a sleep medication called Trazodone.  It’s one of the oldest anti-depressants, but not containing SSRI’s. In fact, it’s a mild anti-histamine.

With those medications I still wake up multiple times per night, and I still have very silly dreams (or like my friend calls them, histamine-dreams).

I try to avoid what I can that wakes me up at night. Wearing an eyemask is one of them. Since the littlest bit of light wakes me up, this is a nice solution. People can get some nice, decent ones at an outdoor shop like A.S. Adventure ( approximetly 10 €). If you’re looking on spending less money on them, some gadgetshops have them too (at about 4 €).

Earplugs are good to keep sound out, altho I haven’t tried them myself. I usually wrap the blanket over my head so sound gets muffled out. Maybe its good to consult a doctor beforehand if you choose to use earplugs long term. A friend of mine used them for a while at night, and she had some complaints..

Also, being utterly relaxed helps too off course. Stress releases histamine into the body, and we want to avoid that before going to bed. Meditation, a bit of yoga, or enjoying sitting outside in the eveningsun, whatever works best..

Off course, these issues can vary from person to person. If you have sleeping issues, always make sure to discuss them with your doctor. If then you can relate it to your histamine intolerance, make sure to look for a solution, together with your doctor and allergist, that fits you best!
